The month of October is notable for Breast Awareness as worldwide organizations embroider their products with pink ribbons. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, each year in the United States, about 240,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer, and more than 40,000 women pass away from the disease. About 10% of all new cases of breast cancer in the U.S. are found in women younger than 45 years of age. To counteract public misinformation on breast cancer, Interact is focusing on providing students the opportunity to work together to fight the battle against breast cancer, while learning how the disease can affect women of all ages.

The club has organized pink week in which they set up a table during both lunches and distribute pink ribbons to passing students. Interact led a pink pep rally, for which they encouraged the student body to dress in pink attire to raise awareness. Additionally, Interact created a pink frame for a photo booth allowing students to ask any of the Interact club members questions regarding breast cancer.

“I was extremely happy to be a part of this project since my freshmen year as an Interact member. I think most of the population knows about Breast Cancer to some extent but maintaining that support for the people going through it is really important to me,” senior Alain Perez said.

The main purpose behind Interact’s breast cancer activities is to keep students and the administration informed. Many people lead busy lives during which their health can easily become secondary. Interact also reminds women of all ages to stay active and go to their physicians for a checkup since early screening is an important step in staying safe. This club hopes to spread as much knowledge about this global dilemma around the campus.

“Interact shines a light on Breast Cancer Awareness Month to inform others and raise support against breast cancer which is something many people have to go through unfortunately some time in their lifetime,” junior Lauren Urra said.

Keep an eye out for the activities Interact has planned this month. They will be helping out with the therapy dogs on campus and will be decorating pumpkins in the spirit of Halloween.
