Ryan Lochte’s fake robbery scandal at the Rio 2016 Olympics made global headlines and drew some unwanted attention and repercussions for this 12-time Olympic medalist. Lochte fabricated a story about how he was robbed at gunpoint by people impersonating police officers. In reality, Lochte was just trying to cover up his drunken shenanigans that night with comrades Jimmy Feigen, Jack Conger and Gunnar Bentz. Lochte and company were out drinking and decided to pull up at a gasoline station at 4 a.m where they caused $400 worth of damage and paid in cash on the spot. Lochte has publicly apologized for his behavior, but this has not prevented him from losing credibility and in turn losing endorsements from companies like Speedo.

Lets see what fellow Cavaliers think about Lochte’s wild night in Rio:

I feel like it was just a big scandal on both parts, at this point I don’t really know who to believe because both parties stories aren’t adding up. I feel really bad for Lochte even if he did lie because he is losing everything. I know lying is a big thing but I don’t think this is big enough for him to lose everything he has dedicated his whole life but at the end of the day it was all a big scandal.

Having been a Lochte fan for the past 6 years, my hearts aches knowing that so many sponsors are dropping him because of the unfortunate mistake he made in Rio. Although he undeniably messed up, I think it’s important for people to remember that he’s human and that everyone makes mistakes.

I personally feel that he was wrong for exaggerating/lying. He should’ve reported the truth whether it was a big deal or ot it would’ve been the right thing to do. Honestly, people have been making such a bid deal out of it.

I think it is unprofessional knowing the social status this man has been taking advantage of it to fake a situation as serious as that.

I understand that he didn’t think the lie would blow up and it was immature but it was also unnecessary of him to make it up in the first place. It just made people mad and took away the spotlight from the other athletes competing at the Olympics.

The world was already in disagreement about the Olympics taking place in Rio 2016 due to the country’s corrupt government and the threat of contracting the Zika virus. Lochte’s decision wasn’t the best but at the end of the day he is human and he did apologize for his actions. Lochte is a role model to many swimmers and athletes and this behavior from a Olympics medalists is unacceptable. Hopefully, he has learned his lesson and can get back on his feet.
