At 6:30 a.m. on Feb. 1, professional tennis player Carlos Alcaraz was surrounded by the uproar of the crowd in Melbourne Park as he realized that he was just one point away from making history. And at 6:32 a.m. Alcaraz did just that. At just 22 years old, Alcaraz has become the youngest male tennis player to win all four Grand Slams, officially marking the rise of the younger generation and becoming an inspiration for young players around the world.
“I love watching tennis because of how exciting it is. The serves are fast and the games are long with few breaks. My favorite tournament is probably the U.S. Open,” senior Oliver Angulo said.
The buzz around the young Spaniard tennis player has started well before the Australian open, however, with fans from around the world surrounding him after his historic win in the 2022 United States Open at only 19 years old, making him the youngest man, since Rafael Nadal, to win a Grand Slam. The attention around Alcaraz has only grown as fellow competitor Jannik Sinner has proven to be a rival to Alcaraz, a pairing that has given the vast tennis audience a show like no other.
Alcaraz’s famous win against Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open marked his seventh Grand Slam ever. This win was only made possible by Alcaraz defeating the 38-year-old Serbian player who currently holds the record for the most Grand Slam wins ever, with 24 trophies. Noting this, fans have begun to assume, and even hope, that Alcaraz is on the path to beating this record and becoming the new face for tennis.
“As someone who watched and plays tennis, I think Alcaraz is doing good right now but the way he plays, his body won’t be able to handle it until his late 30s unlike Djokovic. So I think he’s going to last until 34 but now be able to get as many Grand Slams as he wants because of his body,” junior Lucas Galindez said.
The champion was introduced to tennis at a young age as his father was a tennis coach himself. As Alcaraz’s devotion to the sport become more clear, so did his skills. Alcaraz took lessons from high level retired professionals until he finally turned profession in 2018 at the ripe age of 15. His official debut on the Association of Tennis Professionals was in the Rio Open in 2020.
It did not take long for the young player to become noticed, with his ferocious swings and signature drop shots. Soon enough many young fans had begun to look up to him, especially after the retirements of tennis players Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.
“Watching Carlos Alcaraz play is very inspiring, even though I stopped playing tennis as a sport it so cool to watch him. The fact that he’s won so many tournaments at so young is insane. He’s also a great guy and his interviews are very calm and nice,” senior Alejandro Monroy said.
Alcaraz is paving the way for the new generation of tennis players as well. Professionals such as Jannik Sinner, Ben Shelton, Coco Gauff and even Mirra Andreeva have begun to take the spotlight with the dominance they show in each and every match.
As Alcaraz processes his own win, there is no doubt that he is meant for great things. But as him and other professionals begin to win more awards and trophies and break new records they also begin to inspire new players. Just as the players of the older generation encouraged these young professionals, these new leaders are inspiring high school students around the world.
“Carlos Alcaraz winning the career Grand Slam is very inspiring for all of the tennis players at Gables especially as a Spaniard, he is a big spruce of pride for all of the Hispanic community. He’s had a lot of really great accomplishments for someone so young so it’s cool to see him excel in a sport I care about, ” junior Olivia Simon said.
As the wins of these young athletes impact those all over, even Coral Gables Senior High’s Cavalier tennis team takes this to heart. With their season just beginning to start, Gables’ tennis coach Mr. Groff makes it a point to share with his players the importance of keeping up with professional tennis events as he send reminders often to his players of the current news and topics. In the end, many young fans find these players inspiring and hope to see them play more with many hoping for more records to be broken soon.
