With the Super Bowl approaching, football fans are beginning to predict which two teams are going to be playing this year. The game is set to take place on Feb. 1 in the University of Phoenix stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

The most favored teams to play in the Super Bowl are the Green Bay Packers and the New England Patriots. Along with these two teams, other teams that are favored to make it are the Denver Broncos, the Seattle Seahawks and the Indianapolis Colts.

“The Patriots have always been my favorite team, so I think that they”ll be able to make it to the playoffs and play in the Super Bowl,” sophomore Judith Ramos said.

The Patriots, being one of the most favored teams to win, have all the odds in their favor. Even after the Patriots broke their eight game winning streak a couple weeks back, their betting odds are still high; at 15/4, and their streak at 12-4, they are the favorites to represent the American Football Conference (AFC) in the Super Bowl. The teams in the AFC that do have a chance at making it to the playoffs must have more than seven wins. However, the teams that have the most reasonable odds at winning the Super Bowl are the teams that are part of the National Football Conference (NFC). Eight of the teams in the NFC all have an equal chance at making it to the playoffs and winning the Super Bowl. “Right now my favorite team is the Seahawks. Their defense has been great all season, and they’ve only lost a couple of games, so I really hope they’re able to make it to the Super Bowl again,” sophomore Olivia Pelaez said.

One of the most well-known performances every year is the Pepsi Super Bowl halftime show. Every year, millions of people watch the game, giving the artists more exposure to people. After the show, the sales of the artist’s albums and songs skyrocket, bringing in millions of dollars for the performer. Nonetheless, this year the tables have turned for the halftime show performer. The National Football League (NFL) had stated that they would be asking the halftime act to pay to perform. Around the time the NFL had asked the performers to pay to play, Katy Perry had stated that in her opinion she would not pay to play at the halftime show. The league had supposedly narrowed the performers down to three: Rihanna, Coldplay and Katy Perry. Yet, on Nov. 23, the NFL had stated that they had chosen Katy Perry to perform in the halftime show. It is not known whether or not the NFL had changed their minds about the payment, or whether Perry had agreed to pay; either way, both are in a win-win situation.

“The halftime performer shouldn’t pay to perform because the NFL asks them to perform, so they shouldn’t pay to perform if the NFL asked them to; if someone wanted to perform then that would be a different story,” junior Tatiana Taylor said.

Many watch the Super Bowl for the game, others for the halftime show and some watch it for the commercials. The Super Bowl commercials are known as the funniest and greatest of the year, known for creating great controversies and new trends. One of the commercials that created controversy last year was Coca-Cola’s ‘America the Beautiful’; once it aired, the commercial received both positive and negative comments. However, many of last year’s commercials had a heartwarming tale about friendship and family such as the Cheerios’ “Gracie” commercial.

“Usually I watch the game and the commercials and do homework during the halftime show. The commercials are usually funnier. I remember one vividly about a car commercial where Bruno Mars is singing in the background and everything is saved at the last second,” freshman Lior Colina said.

With so much to look forward to, this year’s Super Bowl has many things in store for its fans. Make sure to catch Super Bowl XLIX on Feb. 1, and root for your favorite team.
