Every student strives to succeed academically both in school and in their community, hoping to receive recognition for such hard work. One student who has done just that, senior Roberto Lopez is one of thousands of candidates who won the Papa John’s Pizza “Orgullo de Nuestra Juventud” Scholarship. On Feb. 5, Univision stopped by Gables to interview Lopez about his great achievements.

“I feel surprised that I got this scholarship because I never thought that I could achieve something this important,” Lopez said.

Lopez was nominated for the scholarship by ESOL teacher Mrs. Keedy, because she knew he would gain recognition for such outstanding community service. In an effort to give back, Lopez regularly participates in events with the Interact Club and with “La Lega Contra el Cancer.” Not to mention his 3.7 grade point average (GPA), which is always sought after by colleges and universities.

Roberto is a winner, in spite of his physical impediments; he is a competitive young gentleman who ventures beyond his disability.

Roberto Lopez is a great example of how being an active member in the community, as well as an excellent student academically, pays off in the long run. The scholarship will be presented to Lopez at an award luncheon that will take place at Jungle Island on May 1, 2o15.
