Hosting a full-blown celebration of charisma, humor and talent, Cavaliers at Coral Gables Senior High are gearing up for the annual Mr. Coral Gables pageant. By transforming the stage in the name of Cavalier spirit, Mr. Coral Gables contestants bring their vibrant personalities and eye-catching talents to the spotlight. At the end of the night, contestants hope to secure the ultimate prize of being crowned “Mr. Coral Gables” with their personality, humor and stage presence.
Beginning as a friendly competition filled with dazzling introductions, creative talents and quick-witted Question & Answer moments, Mr. Coral Gables marks an unforgettable and entertaining night for Cavaliers. But behind the scenes lie months of preparation and brainstorming, as each contestant spends countless hours perfecting routines and crafting captivating introductions.
For many participants, joining Mr. Coral Gables stems from a mix of excitement and the desire to showcase their organizations on stage. Some contestants are nominated by their clubs or sports teams, while others volunteer after hearing about the event during meetings or through word of mouth.
United through a shared sense of pride to represent their clubs, the selected contestants begin preparing months in advance. They work closely with club sponsors, classmates and the Gablettes dance team to develop creative introductions that highlight their personalities and embody the spirit of their clubs or sports.
“It is exciting to see how much effort [juniors and seniors] put in and how everyone works together to make [Mr. Coral Gables] special. Their teamwork and energy show how much school spirit they have and how much they care about representing Gables. Every move and expression shows their [Cavalier] spirit and teamwork, and it is inspiring to watch them light up the stage and bring everyone together,” freshman Valeria Florentino said.
From clever skits to choreographed entrances, each moment is carefully planned to grab the audiences’ attention and set the tone for the night. Whether it is a solo dance or a comedic routine with friends, contestants dedicate many afternoons to rehearsing dances, writing skits and perfecting musical acts.
Even the Q&A segment, known for its humor and unpredictability, requires a bit of practice. Although contestants do not rehearse their answers word-for-word, many spend time brainstorming fun and confident ways to respond on the spot, blending humor and quick thinking.
Ramping up the intensity and structure compared to previous years, contestants began meeting after school as early as Oct. 29th to begin rehearsals. Every Tuesday and Thursday from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., with the help of the Gablettes, contestants refine their choreography and stage presence, ensuring every movement is polished.
In past years, themes like “Through the Decades” and “Gables’ Got Talent” encouraged contestants to tell stories through a variety of eras and acts. Building on those past productions, this group is enhancing their choreography, syncing outfits and repurposing set pieces such as light panels and backdrops to bring the illusion of a live pop concert to life.
During early rehearsals, discussions about wardrobe ideas, song choices and prop coordination took center stage. To fit this years’ theme, “Band Boy Nation,” contestants plan to incorporate microphones, stage lights and coordinated outfits to reflect the high-energy, concert-like atmosphere of a real boy band performance.
“They can sing, they have instruments, they dance and they do a lot during their talent portion. Backstage, it is truly an honor to be able to help the contestants, especially since each one of them likes something different and they all have unique personalities. Costumes is an even better incorporation into their performances, the contestants all get to choose their own clothing and costume that is fitting to what they like and their talent,” senior Sarah Villarreal said.

Over the years, Mr. Coral Gables has grown into an anticipated talent showcase amongst Cavaliers. From daring stunts to original songs, past performances continue to raise the bar for creativity.
With many contestants tying their acts to their clubs or sports, last year, International Baccalaureate Honor Society President Sebastian Lopez left the crowd in awe with his daring fire-and-chemistry act.
This years’ contestants are already brainstorming ways to match that level of showmanship, planning comedy routines and performances that reflect their clubs’ identity. With each act promising something new, the excitement that surrounds this years’ show continues to build up.
“It starts off with a dance opener, a group dance with smiles and laughter. Then, the boys move on to the talent portion where each one of them show off what they can do. Some Cavaliers start off with a fun dance and props, and other [contestants] take the audience on a trip to Chemistry and Theatre. They can sing, they can dance, after all, this is Gables, where everybody has their own personality,” senior Sofia Atay said.
Beyond rehearsals and stage work, Mr. Coral Gables thrives on mentorship. Each year, senior contestants who have previously competed take juniors under their wing by helping them refine their choreography, choose stage outfits and master the art of commanding the spotlight. These moments of collaboration keep the tradition and camaraderie of the event alive long before opening night.
At its core, Mr. Coral Gables is more than just a pageant, it is a celebration of spirit, creativity and camaraderie. In the final weeks leading up to the show, full technological rehearsals and intermission run-throughs will keep contestants on their toes, ensuring everything runs smoothly. From the first rehearsal to the final bow, every participant contributes to a night that captures the humor, heart and pride of Gables.
“After many years of leading the [Mr. Coral Gables] contestants, it is always a fun experience getting students from all different kinds of sports and clubs. Seeing all these kids that do not usually socialize become friends during the preparations and the process is truly magical. After the show is over, they always know how proud I am of them and what they accomplished, and they should know to be proud of themselves. They always work hard,” Ms. Diaz said.
