The rhythmic sound of applause echoed against the auditorium walls, signaling the start to a morning dedicated to Cavalier excellence. On March 16, students, staff and parents filled the Coral Gables Senior High School auditorium to celebrate achievement and dedication at the annual awards ceremony. Each student was nominated by teachers who witness their growth and commitment throughout the year and then finally are selected to be honored in front of their peers.
Teachers carefully selected students based on their character and contributions to the school. Many students were nominated by multiple teachers, reflecting dedication across various subjects.
“Following in my older brother’s footsteps, I have become a part of the Gables boys’ volleyball team as a junior varsity player. Volleyball has given me more than just a title on the court… it has taught me to rely on my classmates and to push through challenges mentally and physically. The Principal’s Freshman award has stimulated my ability to keep improving, not only as a student but as an athlete. Being part of a team has shown me to always represent Gables, stay committed and to continue striving to be a better Cavalier,” freshman Mathias Corpart said.
Student Activities members and supervisors drafted personalized scripts for each recipient. The community decorated the auditoriums with tables arranged with desserts, adding a welcoming touch and the stage served as a focal point. Student Activities members welcomed attendees and managed the check-in process.
Masters of ceremonies, sophomore Natalia Quick and senior Daniel Wu, opened the event before Principal Anthony Balboa spoke about the importance of recognizing student achievement. Following his remarks, senior Lucas Aparicio performed the national anthem on behalf of Troupe 0476.
“Hassling between reviewing nominations and finding decorations for the actual events, we had little time to fool around. My fellow Student Activities members and I would jump at the chance when somebody needed help to place a light-up letter on stage or arrange the dessert jars on top of the check-in tables, because Gables is all about community,” sophomore Natalia Quick said.
Students were recognized in order of grade level, starting with freshmen and concluding with seniors. This progression allowed every group to be celebrated in turn, building anticipation throughout the ceremony. As students crossed the stage with their plaques, the auditorium filled with applause. Families and friends paused for photos, capturing the recognition students had worked to recieve the entire year.
“Ever since I discovered my enthusiasm for the field of science, I have found a place where my curiosity is fostered and turned into creating through involvement in robotics. Engineering has pushed me to solve real-world problems and collaborate with others who share the same drive through competitions and projects. I have learnt that success doesn’t come naturally, but by making mistakes. I am so grateful for the support my friends and family give me as I continue my journey at Gables through the STEM field and as Rookie of the year,” freshman Felix Parra said.
With every step across the stage, it became clear that the ceremony was a reflection of the dedication and growth of every student. By the time the final names were called, the room held a lasting sense of pride in the Cavalier community.
“On my way to becoming a science researcher, doors have opened at Gables more than I could imagine. Every way I look, a new team awaits my presence to join them, just like Cross Country and SECME. I’m fortunate enough to continue my journey at Gables with the Rising Star award, I’ve been motivated to work alongside my fellow Cavaliers to go for gold,” sophomore Nicolas Theye said.
