Strolling through the red and white halls of Coral Gables Senior High School, the prospect of success looms ahead for each and every student. With endless possibilities in sight, there is something for everyone. Currently home to over 40 clubs, 25 sports teams, two magnet programs and five high achieving academies, the Cavaliers draw in newcomers, as they strive to achieve success through collaboration and passion. When asked the question, “Why Gables?” the answer seems clear, for the school is not only a place to learn, but it is also a place to grow, to strengthen connections and to discover more about the surrounding world.
“As a senior at Gables, I believe that I made a good decision coming here. I feel like the teachers, especially the [International Baccalaureate] ones, really care about the students well being. They want their students to succeed, which personally I have not found at any other high school. For me, the most special part about Gables is the support that we receive as students, “ senior William Hardie said.
Since its opening in 1950, Gables has become a school of renown. Each year it has grown in size and opportunity, but the goals of incoming students have remained the same. With the promise of experiencing an educational path unlike any other, students have entered Gables eager to embrace their high school years. In comparison to other high schools, Gables is unique in its available opportunities, especially with its two magnets, the Academy of Finance and International Baccalaureate. These programs are especially attractive, as they are known for preparing individuals for a life beyond high school. By offering such a wide range of rigorous academics, Gables stands out as the best choice for students who are seeking an education that suits their interests.
“I chose to come to Gables for its academic programs. When deciding, I felt that the classes here were better than the options at other high schools. So far I have made a lot friends here, and I already feel as if I have accustomed to the transition from middle school to high school. I definitely think Gables will help me do well both academically and socially,” freshman Letal Alfonso said.
Transitioning from middle school to high school can be a tough adjustment, but with the extensive number of clubs, sports and supportive teachers that can be found on the Gables campus, a sense of belonging soon encompasses those new to the school. The vibrant community throughout Gables is evident to students, faculty and staff. Becoming a Cavalier seems to be the goal of everyone. The clubs, sports and publications come together to form a camaraderie within the school, enticing not just new students, but current students to join in the fun. Gables has much to offer and even students who were not active in the past, now find themselves drawn into the action.
“I decided to come to Gables over any of my other options because of the opportunities that are available to students. For me, the IB program seems especially promising, and I have seen the success that students gain from it. I am looking forward to my future at Gables, and hopefully my experience with IB will be a good one,” freshmen Sophie Gander said.
The Cavalier environment, full of school-spirit, friendship and learning, is beneficial for prospective students who want to learn while enjoying themselves. At Gables, they have the opportunity to grow into their personal character while pursuing dreams of leadership and commitment. The students themselves dictate their futures by the choices they make of classes, friends and extracurricular activities. The sky is the limit for Cavaliers who want to get involved.
“Gables seemed like the best fit for me overall. My brother graduated from here a couple of years ago, and he really enjoyed his experience. He encouraged me to attend, and so did many of my friends. Even though I have only been here a couple of weeks, I feel somewhat at home. All of the teachers have been extremely welcoming, and I cannot wait to see where my academics will take me in the next couple of years,” freshmen Gabriel Pavao said.
Like many other high schools, Gables is academically competitive. What makes it so special, though, is the community of acceptance and support available on this campus. At any given time, students and teachers are willing to help, and this is the sense of guidance that students search for in their high school experience. While new freshmen may consider alternative high schools such as Design and Architecture Senior High or Maritime and Science Technology Academy, their future as a successful Cavalier lies ahead. Before they know it, they will be graduating seniors looking back at Gables as proud alumni.
