On Dec. 5, Coral Gables Senior High School’s gym held a long-awaited rivalry basketball game against Miami Senior High School, transforming the Cavalier gym into a buzzing arena long before tipoff. The sound of shoes squeaking on the court mixed with chants echoing from the bleachers as students, parents and alumni packed every row turned it into an unforgettable game. With the stands filled to the top and the crowd roaring throughout both the junior varsity and varsity matchups, the evening delivered everything from intense competition to highlight reel moments.
The JV team kicked off the night at 6 p.m., setting the tone for the showdown with a game that stayed close from start to finish. The Cavaliers traded baskets with Miami High through all four quarters, keeping the crowd on the edge as each possession became more crucial as the game went on.

Gables found its rhythm through sophomores Spencer Stampler and Randolph O’Campo, who quickly emerged as the driving forces for Gables. Stampler’s consistency around the rim and O’Campo’s aggressive defense kept the Cavaliers competitive even when Miami High went on short scoring runs. The pair led multiple momentum shifting plays, including forced turnovers and powerful lay-ups that brought the fans to their feet.
“It was one of the most intense games we played this season. The game put so much pressure on us from the start, since Coach Chris had a three year streak of JV winning against Miami High, but once I got into a rhythm, everything slowed down. Even though we didn’t get the win, I’m proud of how I played and how hard our team fought,” sophomore Spencer Stampler said.
In the final minutes, Gables mounted a push to erase Miami High’s narrow lead. Despite this, Gables ultimately fell 43-41, narrowly missing a comeback that had the entire gym holding its breath. Although the scoreboard did not tip in their favor, the JV team’s determination and resilience stood out as promising signs for the rest of their season.

“A game like this teaches you a lot. It teaches [you] how to stay composed and how every play matters. After we lost, the entire team was upset, but we all realized that despite losing, we have to stay strong, so we got back out there and supported the varsity team,” sophomore Randolph O’Campo said.
Following JV’s tight game, at 7:30 p.m., the varsity Cavaliers took the floor with confidence and quickly asserted control, completely shifting the atmosphere. From the opening tip, Gables dominated on both ends of the court, shutting down Miami High’s offense with blocks that turned into possessions. By halftime, the Cavaliers had built a tremendous lead that only continued to grow and within minutes, Miami High was struggling to keep pace.
”The varsity team was always confident we were going to win. We’ve been practicing day and night for this season and putting in work always makes you better. So when we got onto that court, we came out with our best performance and conquered that court. We’re going to keep bringing that energy the whole season,” junior Dylan Janov said.

Senior Marco Molinet set the tone with his powerful drives to the basket, but delivered the highlight of the night: a powerful slam dunk that sent the gym into an eruption of cheers. Students jumped out of their seats, waving pom poms and stomping on the bleachers as Molinet jogged back onto defense. Fellow senior German Striebeck anchored the team with steady scoring and strong defense, helping to maintain the Cavaliers’ momentum. Junior Dylan Janov lit up the gym with multiple three-pointers, delivering one of his strongest performances of the season. Each shot swished cleanly through the net, and each time, the noise inside the gym pulsated.
The energy in the gym was just as memorable as the action on the court. Students arrived wearing all white, filling the bleachers with a wall of color. Every play, every steal and every three-pointer was met with chants that echoed through the building. The student section synchronized cheers and stomped on the metal stands, supporting their favorite players. Parents sat in bleachers with students, capturing videos while alumni cheered like they never left.
“Everyone was on their feet the whole night, it was like the gym was shaking. This was the loudest game of the year, for sure. Gables versus Miami High always brings out the best energy, it definitely didn’t disappoint. When Marco [Molinet] dunked, the place went insane,” senior Andy Sosa said.
During varsity’s run in the second half, the gym felt like it was vibrating with excitement. Even when the game became a blowout, the crowd never lost intensity. Instead, they celebrated every moment, from bench players getting substituted into the game to the final defensive stop. The atmosphere embodied what rivalry nights are known for at Gables: passion and unwavering Cavalier pride.
By the fourth quarter, Gables’ momentum was unstoppable. Their defensive pressure forced turnovers that led to easy layups. With the crowd rallying behind them, the Cavaliers finished with a 74-36 victory, the type of rivalry win the players will surely remember long after the season ends.
