After an undefeated regular season, the Lady Cavs competed against Braddock on May 1 for the Semi-Finals District competition. Gables solidly defeated Braddock by leaving the scoreboard 40-6. Two days after the victory, the girls went to Miami High for the Districts championship title. Sadly for Gables, the girls were unable to backup their first victory as they lost to Miami High 8-12.

“Knowing that we finished 7-0 in the regular season and overcame our own adversities as a team to make it this far puts a smile on my face even though we came up short. Thank you 2016-2017 flag football team for showing me how to carry myself as a captain, teammate, student, and friend. I’m excited to see what next year has in store for us,” junior Gabriela Morales said.

At the Districts final game, Isis Billings scored a touchdown leaving the scoreboard 6-0. After Billings’ touchdown, Miami High made a touchdown and the two teams were tied. Gables had many chances to score touchdowns as they were around three times near the end zone. However, they were unable to put points on the board. Dayanna Ruiz had a safety which gave Gables the lead again by two points. However, Miami High made a touchdown at the last minute and stole the win from the Cavs.

“Sadly this is my last year at Gables, meaning that I won’t be able to join the team next year throughout their journey. To me, it didn’t matter that we didn’t win because we have improved a lot throughout the whole season, which is everything that matters to me,” sophomore Lisdeyvis Mestre said.

Although the team didn’t win the Districts Finals, this season meant so much more for them. They have improved so much since last year’s season. The Lady Cavs lost to Miami High at their first game last year 26-0, but only lost to the High Tides by four points this year in the District championship, showing just how much this new team has improved in only a year. Make sure to follow the girls next year as they take on the new season in the Spring of 2018!
