On Saturday, May 3, Gables was filled with the nostalgic and reminiscent footsteps of its past students. Gables’s class of 1964 returned to the school fifty years after graduating to see what their dear alma mater had become. The air buzzed with idle excitement as old friend reunited and gathered to see the halls and buildings they had once wandered.

Present-day Cavaliers volunteered their Saturday afternoons to give the class of ’64 a grand tour of what Gables has grown to be. The alumni were divided into groups, each of which was assigned to two tour guides. The tours commenced, and the alumni experienced what a usual day at Gables is like.

The tour guides led the alumni all around campus, and showed the unique combination of academic, extracurricular, and athletic opportunities that make Gables one of a kind. The past students could be seen wandering through the school reminiscing about the memories they had made in the four years they had spent at Gables.

A flood of emotion could be felt rushing back to the class of 1964 as its students thought of the ways that their lives had been changed at Gables. Most of the alumni vastly enjoyed the murals around the patios in particular. They were also surprised at how the school was more closed off than it had been for them; they remembered Gables as a series of vast, open classrooms, with massive windows installed in order to survive the insatiable heat, and enjoyed what air conditioning had done for the school.

The tour concluded with the alumni being brought back to the auditorium, where they were left to relive unforgettable memories with each other. Some former Gables cheerleaders even gave their past classmates a throwback performance and executed one of their old cheers, complete with their old uniforms!

“This was sincerely a very fulfilling experience. I feel lucky to have had such a wonderful opportunity. A look at Gables’s past was quite something you don’t get to witness every day,” sophomore Joshua Zambrano said.

Overall, the tour fascinated current Cavaliers with a brief glimpse of the past and contented the alumni.

“We were given excellent, informative guides that showed us a good time. It was a very fun, satisfying experience. Gables did a great job,” alumna Lynne Daniels said.
