  • Five Cavalier football players signed with their respective colleges on national signing day.

The excited family members of the senior football players lined the rows of the auditorium on Feb. 3, National College Signing Day, to celebrate and honor the tremendous hard work and effort these seniors have made both on and off of the field. Coach Pollard welcomed the crowd and introduced: Amir Rasul, Shakur Cooper, Gee Stanley, Jaylin Clark-McNatte and Robert Brown. Each player enlightened the crowd on their post-college acceptance plan and reflected upon their ups and downs while playing for Gables.

The talented seniors also offered some advice to their fellow team mates. Some of their tips were to stay focused on school work because work in the classroom will transfer on to the field and to stay away from girls because they come and go, whereas championships are forever. The players also told their team mates to remember to be there for each other and to know that everyone has their own path-they just need to find it.

I’m gonna have this conversation with them tomorrow; I’m gonna let them enjoy it today and then I’m gonna be the devil. For every senior that’s at Coral Gables Senior High, understand that the next step after you cross that stage [at graduation] is going to be your first step since your going back to being a freshman. Remember what it was like walking through the hallways at CGHS as a freshman, not knowing anything, scared; all those feelings are going to return. Keep in mind that we are a prideful animal and we give ourselves a little too much credit sometimes, so don’t take all of that credit and be humble.

— Coach Pollard

After saying their thanks each player announced and signed the acceptance letter for their respective colleges as well as took photos with family and friends. Amir Rasul will be going to Florida State University (FSU), Shakur Cooper will be going to Florida International University (FIU), Gee Stanley will be going to Coffeyville Community College, Jaylin Clark-McNatte will be going to Ellsworth Community College, and Robert Brown will be going to Bryant University. The event was then moved to the library so that family and friends could receive refreshments and mingle.
