Receiving college advice for underclassmen is critical to ensure a successful college process in the future. It helps students effectively work to pursue their interest and passions at a college that is right for them. Above all, advising on proactive financial planning to fund their college education is crucial at the beginning of high school. Here are some things you should be doing throughout high school to prepare for college.


Freshman

  • Begin to pick programs or courses that might help when earning their degree and make a plan for future debt problems.
  • Get involved in extracurricular activities because involving yourself early in clubs shows your interest in school.
  • Try to take the most challenging courses that might help you in the long run and boost your weighted GPA.
  • Visit nearby colleges and research about summer internships.

“I think it helps students make a path for their future, it helps them navigate through high school, college, and career”, freshman Isabella Ahumada said.

Sophomore

  • Counselors are an excellent resource to discuss possible future careers and goals because their many years of experience with students offers a unique perspective on the process.
  • Another important part of the process is researching the requirements for each major. Work with your counselor to pinpoint what school courses to take and pass to fit those college subjects the best.
  • Take full advantage of the courses and internships offered at Gables that are related to your desired major.
  • Begin to research colleges early to have an idea of what you want for your future and what are the requirements for colleges you might be interested in.
  • Apply for higher positions in clubs and extracurricular activities.
  • Get facts about the costs of colleges and research basic financial aid if necessary.
  • Visit colleges that you are interested in and that have programs related to your future occupation.
  • Work on keeping up your GPA and start studying for the SAT.
  • Determine how much you need to save for college.

Altogether, if you prepare for college throughout high school, the application process is less stressful and goes much more smoothly. effectively with good managing skills help reduces the stress during the process. When the work is left until the last minute, can significantly increas anxiety levels for students. Which is why being prepared so early on is key.
