Some of the boys' cross country team members getting ready to run
The Gables Cross Country team stormed through GMACs this year. On Friday, Oct. 16, even though the weather didn’t cooperate too much, the meet ended up going on, with the runners running through the rain.
For the girls’ varsity team, senior Kady Boylan came in 31st place with a time of 23 minutes and 17 seconds. For the girls’ junior varsity team, sophomore Trinidad McGraw got seventh place with a time of 25 minutes and 44 seconds and sophomore Valeria Gutierrez got eighth place with a time of 25 minutes and 56 seconds. For the boys’ varsity team, sophomore Cavan Wilson came in 23rd with a time of 18 minutes and 1 second. For the boys’ junior varsity team, sophomore Gabriel Benedi came in second place with a time of 19 minutes and 33 seconds.
“The weather was very bad. It was very cloudy, rainy and dark. Some of us didn’t even think we were going to run. We ended up racing and it is the first time I have ever ran in the rain so it was a very interesting experience. A few of us PR’d which is always amazing. I am so proud of us. A few of us finished feeling as if it went by faster than previous races. We have been working hard and we have a few more races so I am hopeful that it will pay off. We have had an amazing season. I love these girls and I love this team,” senior Eleonor Bauwens said.
Overall, the girls’ varsity team was able to get eighth place while the boys’ varsity team snagged fifth place. The Cross Country team will now be preparing themselves for districts where, if they qualify, they will get to regionals – and hopefully states.
“The girls and boys performed very well. I was impressed by some of the times, but mostly proud of all their hard work,” Cross Country Coach Mr. Nelson said.
Make sure to support the Cavalier Cross Country team at their next meet on Thursday, Oct. 22 at 3 p.m. at Larry and Penny Thompson park.
