Art Basel has been transporting visitors with their alluring media since 1970 and forty-five years later, Art Basel continues to bring astonishing art pieces to cities like, Hong Kong and Miami. The annual Art Basel gallery struck Miami once again on the first week of December and left Miami in awe with the new abstract displays.

Amongst the sea of art connoisseurs, some alarming incidents took place: a man who was suspected of robbing Bank of America was fatally shot by police during Art Basel and a woman was stabbed in a crowd of art lovers after a quarrel with a stranger. Despite these unfortunate turn of events, Art Basel was still a success.

“Although there was turbulence in the environment, the art was spectacular and truly left me speechless,” freshman Natalia Torres said.

Premiere artists like Jenny Holzer and Trevor Paglen discussed their artistic success with their audience. To many, speakers like these are what truly allows students and the general audience to learn from someone with artistic experience.  Many aspiring young and talented artists visit Art Basel to learn how to improve their work. With the spectacular masterpieces displayed and intellectual speakers, the audience undoubtedly enjoyed Art Basel.

“I have gone to Art Basel every year for as long as I can remember. It is amazing to see how big it has gotten and how it now seems to involve all of Miami. It seems to attract everyone from art connoisseurs to high school students. I think it is a great platform for up and coming artists and successful artists alike to display their work and get their name out there,” senior Eleonor Bauwens said.

Many of our very own Cavaliers had a stupendous time at Art Basel that left them with their jaws wide open and their camera rolls filled. Art Basel is an incredible event iconic to Miami; this art show allows aspiring artists to get their name out there as well as offer a rich cultural experience to its visitors. If you were unable to go this year, don’t fret because 2016 Art Basel will be better than ever!
