A new take on the classic book series by Daniel Handler, A Series of Unfortunate Events follows the lives of Violet and Klaus Baudelaire (played by Malina Weissman and Louis Hynes) through their unlucky lives as the evil Count Olaf (played by Neil Patrick Harris) attempts to steal their dead parents fortune.

“I think it was a really good adaptation of the books. It wasn’t at all like the movie mostly because Jim Carrey was the original count Olaf and Neil Patrick Harris is totally different. The books went into a lot more depth detail-wise, but I thought the characters matched really well with the actors.” senior Gabriela Vega.

One of the things viewers are overjoyed about is the fact that the books were adapted into a television series instead of yet another movie. Many say that the 2004 movie version felt very rushed and wasn’t as true to the books as it could have been. With the book being adapted into a show, viewers now get to see more detail into the lives of the Baudelaire orphans.

Many viewers also thought that the book series was more convenient because they could easily keep reading for as along as they wanted, whereas having to wait for the next season. It also seemed to do a good job at extending the movies and highlighting up to the fourth book.

“I didn’t think I’d be as into the show as I was when I started it. As I was watching the first episode I was thinking how weird this show was and how it wasn’t what I thought it would be and how I wasn’t going to watch the second episode. But then, at the end of the episode there was this cliff hanger that just got me hooked so I just had to keep watching. I ended up finishing the whole season in like two days,” sophomore Karina Wu said.

It’s impossible not to get wrapped up into the unfortunate lives of the the Baudelaire orphans as the show’s narrator, Lemony Snicket, tells the viewers from the beginning “there is no happy ending, there is no happy beginning and very few happy things in the middle.” This mysterious beginning is what lures viewers in and keeps them hooked on to continue watching, hoping that the Baudelaire siblings will one day get a happy ending.
