Open House Back-to-School Night

September 12 marks the night that students bring their parents back to school. The field was full of cars with no spaces to spare, and the halls were over crowded with students and Gablettes guiding parents to the classrooms.

“I love having the opportunity, along with the other Gablettes, to walk around the school and help the parents find the different classrooms at Open House. I have been a part of it for the past 4 years, and I have had a great experience year after year. The parents are always really easy to work with and are always open to a little bit of help,” said senior Elizabeth Harley.

At approximately 6pm, parents were seated in the very chairs that students spend their first period in. They gave teachers their full attention as they spoke about the course they teach and what it has to offer their children.

Mr. Costa, along with the other assistant principals, stood by the attendance office to greet parents while they traveled from period to period. Parents were able to get a feel of the environment their children spend their time in and get a glimpse of how rigorous the school year will be.

“By pushing my mom to come to open house I feel like she understands how teachers act and exactly what their expectations are from us in each and every one of my classes. Not only was my mom able to walk in my shoes for a couple hours, but she was able to communicate with my teachers. I look forward to it every year,” said junior Maria Barrios.

About the Contributor
Patricia Passwaters, Editor in Chief
Patty Passwaters is a senior in the Communication, Arts, Film and Digital Media Academy at Coral Gables Senior High School. Ever since freshman year she has taken every opportunity to become involved. She is not only the Editor-in-Chief / News Editor of CavsConnect, but is also a member of Interact and NHS, an honorary member of Yearbook, President of Quill & Scroll, Managing Editor of Catharsis, Treasurer of the Creative Writing Club, and Student Council President. Patty is almost always described as a "what you see is what you get kind of girl". She is dedicated, hard working, passionate about what she does, genuine and a hopeless romantic. Even when she has a lot going on if you ever need a helping hand her's would be the first to reach out to you. One of her biggest weaknesses is wanting to make everyone happy. In her opinion, one of the worst feelings someone can feel is letting someone else down. In the rare occasion that she isn't juggling her academics and extra curricular activities at once, you will find her reading. Close friends know that the perfect gift to give her is a Barnes & Noble gift card because there is nothing more that she loves than books. It is her outlet, she loves getting lost in a world full of romance (which set her expectations far too high). Her senior year is definitely going to be bittersweet, although she doesn't want high school to come to an end, she can't wait to see what else is in store for her. She is grateful to everyone who has made her high school experience one that she will never forget.
