Be Green!

Nicolas Schmidt, Staff Writer

As you walk around your neighborhood, you might see some people recycling their garbage. These people are helping to save the world by allowing the rest of the world to reuse all of their possessions and not wasting materials. But what else can be done to save the world? Many things can be done to help conserve our earth, right at home!

  • Try to use cars less.

Cars create a lot of pollution, which in turn contributes to global warming, which as you probably know is detrimental to the environment. You can try to avoid using cars completely by using public transportation. If more people take the bus or train, less pollution is produced. If you aren’t a people-person, then a good method of transportation for you could be biking or walking. In case you don’t want to exercise in the morning, or you have to take a car, then you can form a carpool group with your friends!

  • Use less at home.

There are plenty of things that you can do inside your house in order to contribute to saving the world. One of the biggest changes you can make is changing lightbulbs. Similarly, you can turn off lights when you leave a room, unplug your charger when you are done with it and use rechargeable batteries. In addition to energy there are things you can do to save paper! Try to save paper by using one less napkin a day. This might not seem like much, but imagine the amount of paper saved if everyone did it. Print on both sides of paper when printing an essay or a project. You can also try to reduce the use of water, thus making it more accessible to people who need it. In order to reduce water use, try not to rinse your plates before putting them in the dishwasher. There are a lot of ways to save water in the bathroom. Taking showers instead of baths, or just taking shorter showers, are two great ones.

  • Do more online.

With all the things that you can do today online, saving paper has never been easier. Try using E-Ticket, an app that saves your plane tickets digitally, allowing you to not have to worry about where you put it and to save paper by not having to print it. Carrying a book through school can be very tedious. Make your life easier by downloading your books through apps like kindle, or nook. If you like computers and find yourself buying new software over and over, then you should download your software instead of getting it on a compact disc. Most high school students don’t do their own bills; however you could mention the idea of doing them online to your friends and parents, which saves a ton of paper!

  • Recycle.

It goes without saying that recycling is very important in order to save the world, but what encourages recycling, and what should you recycle? Recycling glass reduces air and water pollution significantly, and it takes less fuel than making new glass. Recycle any aluminum that you have. If you have a lot of newspaper or similar material and you do not feel like recycling it, at least use it cleverly. Several recyclable items could make up a cool gift wrap. Avoid plastic bags and bottles – a lot of the plastic in the world does not get recycled and causes harm to the environment.

In today’s world there are many heroes that are fighting for their countries. However, people are now starting to form into different types of heroes – those that fight for their planet. These heroes do all they can to save the world and its people. They succeed by doing some of the things listed above. So why don’t you become a hero and help save the planet?
