Our Rating: Dunkin’ Donuts: B, Krispy Kreme: A

The donut was first invented in 1847 and has been America’s favorite breakfast, lunch, and dinner ever since- just ask Homer Simpson. To deliver this perfect snack, you need either Krispy Kreme or Dunkin’ Donuts. Which shop will be the one to deliver the best donut? It all comes down to the quality, price, and accessibility. We tested their skills by ordering the classic glazed donut from each shop.

What to Order:

Dunkin’ Donuts:   The assortment of donuts that Dunkin’ offers is endless: classic glazed donuts, upcoming Halloween donuts, mini donuts called Munchkin Donut Holes, and many more. In addition, to get into the autumn spirit, coffee lovers can now also satisfy their cravings with a Pumpkin Spice Macchiato.

Krispy Kreme: Krispy Kreme, on the other hand, has a larger variety of classic glazed donuts and fewer holiday donuts. Similar to Dunkin’ Donut’s Munchkin Donut Holes, Krispy Kreme presents their own selection of glazed donut holes that come in either cups or boxes. Just like everything else at Krispy Kreme, their donut holes come in the classic original glaze, chocolate, powdered and blueberry.

“Both Dunkin’ Donuts and Krispy Kreme are good in their own way, but there are slight differences. I would live longer if I ate more Dunkin Donuts,” junior Timothy Lamb said.

Winner: Dunkin’ Donuts

Price:

Sadly, there is a 20 cent difference between both donut shops’ original glazed donuts. However, the 20 cent difference loses importance when it comes to the quality of the glazed donut.

Dunkin’ Donuts: The original glazed donut cost only $1.09 without tax. Dunkin’ Donuts has all the donuts prepared already, so it’s quick and ready for pick up, but they do come out cold and stale. Nevertheless, when it comes to coffee, Dunkin’ has it packed down. A regular small cup of coffee is around $1.59 to $2.09, depending on the size. Dunkin’ Donuts sells ground coffee and Keurig cups for that quick energy boost.

Krispy Kreme: For just one glazed donut, Krispy Kreme’s price is $1.29. The same price as a song on iTunes, it makes sense that tasting a Kispy Kreme donut is like hearing a great song for the first time. The glazed donut was served out of the oven and warm, the glaze oozing down and finger licking good.

Winner: Krispy Kreme

Delivery

Dunkin’ Donuts: Running America’s supply of donuts and coffee since 1950, there are over 7,000 Dunkin’ Donut retail locations across the U.S. From highway interstates to almost every street corner, Dunkin’ Donuts is easy and accessible, often found in gas stations, drive-thrus, and airports.

Krispy Kreme: There are a little over 300 Krispy Kreme stores in the United States, each of them giving off a classic, homey, and diner-style vibe. Krispy Kreme understands that they have few locations, so they compensate by selling their products at local supermarkets, and make great fundraisers for school. Although once you’ve actually visited one of their stores and tried one of their mouthwatering hot and ready donuts, It’s worth the trip- trust me.

“The way Krispy Kreme doughnuts melt in your mouth- by far I could eat more Krispy Kreme donuts than Dunkin’ Donuts any day,” sophomore Isabella Lopez said.

Winner: Krispy Kreme

Dunkin’ Donuts provides an affordable price for their bready and dense donuts, while Krispy Kreme slightly raises the price for a warm donut. Dunkin’ Donuts is slowly becoming more of a competitor to popular chains such as Starbucks, which is often renowned for its quality. On the other hand, Krispy Kreme lags behind. The oven fresh, conveyor belt donut award goes to Krispy Kreme.
