Since the 80’s, shark movies have brought the fear of getting eaten alive to a whole new level. “Jaws,” the movie that popularized this sub-genre, laid the foundation for all of the films to come. However, as time went on, the newer shark films became very repetitive and did not live up to the “Jaws” standard; every movie since “Jaws” has been nothing more than Great White Sharks who eat people and cause damage left and right. Then, “The Meg” appeared in theaters.

A 75-foot prehistoric shark called the Megalodon wreaks havoc on a submarine stuck in the depths of the Mariana Trench. The crew, workers at a multi-million dollar marine biology lab, tries their best to find their own way out, but they end up needing the help of Jonas Taylor, a rescue diver that has been traumatized by a supposed past sighting of the Megalodon. Taylor gets the crew out safely, but there is more peril to come.

“I felt like it was very suspenseful, and that something bad was always going to happen,” sophomore Fiorella Merlos said.

Warner Bros. Pictures

This thrilling, action-packed film keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout its entirety. Something is always happening, and you become completely immersed in the movie as soon as it begins. The special effects enhance the movie, and the complexity of the set definitely makes the movie notable. The characters each have their own quirks and the viewers definitely develop an attachment to them. All of the chaos in this movie is caused solely by human exploration, and the film implies the real impact that humans have on nature.

“I, personally believe that the meg was, overall, a better movie [than “Jaws”]. The cinematography of the film was lovely, as well as the animation and acting. As opposed to ‘Jaws’, ‘The Meg’ was suspenseful and thrilling. The graphics, alone, were enough to create a sense of reality. This, combined with the acting, guarantees the success of the film. I sincerely hope this will be a viewed as a classic movie in the years to come.” freshman Rowan Blum said.

Although this film has mixed reviews, almost everyone can agree that this is one of the more logical shark attacks, and “The Meg” goes more in-depth about the science of it all (even if some parts may not be factual). Even if shark movies are not your thing, you should watch “The Meg” because it is captivating and easy to watch. The only problem you might have after viewing this movie is working up the courage to go in the ocean again.
