Taylor Jenkins Reid’s “The Seven Husbands Of Evelyn Hugo” takes fans through a rollercoaster of emotions, telling a story of an old Hollywood star. This riveting novel follows the life of Evelyn Hugo exploring her rise to fame and of course her seven marriages.

It begins with Monique Grant, a reporter, being informed by her editor that she has been hand-selected by 79 year old actress Hugo to do her final interview. Grant is unsure as to why she would be picked for such a task and Grant naturally has her reasons. At her highly anticipated meeting with Hugo, Grant learns that not only does she wish to do the interview but that she is also being recruited to write a tell-all book about Hugo’s life.

The book includes themes of feminism, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer rights, fame, friendship and love. Throughout the course of the book, the readers learn everything about the elusive Hugo whose life has been under a microscope ever since her cinematic debut in the 1950s.

One of the most admired parts of this book is how complex the character Hugo is. From her very first meeting with Grant, Hugo clarifies that she is not a good person. She is not a perfect character, she makes mistakes and more than anything goes after what she wants, disregarding anything standing in her way. This book stands out due to just how human Hugo is.

“Oh my God, I read this book a while back and loved it,” sophomore Marla Aman said.

Throughout her life, Hugo forms beautiful friendships and relationships with characters such as Harry Cameron and Celia St. James. Her love life is thoroughly explored and depicts many different types of bonds. She goes through many terrible relationships until she meets “the one,” and even that is filled with ups and downs and harsh life lessons. This book shows the rise and fall of love several times before its end.

“The Seven Husbands Of Evelyn Hugo” is one of my favorite books, there was so much I didn’t see coming and I recommend it to almost anyone who asks for a suggestion,” sophomore Anabelle Gonzalez said.

Four years after its release, “The Seven Husbands Of Evelyn Hugo” has a rating of 4.4 stars on Goodreads. It has become a New York Times Best Seller and was nominated for a Best Historical Fiction Goodreads Choice Award in 2017. The novel was picked up by Freeform and Fox 21 in 2019 for a film adaptation that fans have been dreaming of since its release.

“The Seven Husbands Of Evelyn Hugo” deals with very relatable situations that readers from across the world can deeply relate to. Reid is notorious for writing complex characters and she certainly did not disappoint. Seeing Hugo’s character develop from the beginning to the end of her life is definitely a highlight for many. Overall, this book flows perfectly, engaging readers with a captivating storyline and the luxurious old Hollywood aesthetic.
