Does Time Really Change You?

The first day of school marks an end to a period of relaxation but also a new beginning to an academic year’s worth of memories. Every student comes onto campus on the first day feeling unique emotions. To convey what the first day of school really feels like, one freshman and one senior from the CavsConnect staff share their first day experiences.

The first day of freshman year:

With thousands of agonizing thoughts leaping through your brain, you’re left wondering if you will even remotely blend in with your three thousand classmates. Is it too childish? Will anyone else have it? All kinds of senseless questions taunt you as you embrace the next chapter of your life, which you know you’re starting from square one. The most frightening thought is acknowledging that you no longer lie in your middle school niche with your childhood friends that knew every quirky detail there is to know about you. However, you know that this new beginning marks some of the most glorious days of your life – days you will look back on all your life. Not knowing what is ahead, you take a dive into the ocean of schoolwork, upperclassmen and clean slate friendships.

The first day of senior year:

Crown mounted on head with an aura of confidence, you walk onto campus ready to rule the school. For the first time in three years, you feel as though nothing can stop you; you’re at the top of the “food chain,” so to speak. Just like years past, you happily greet your friends while rubbing the sleep out of your eyes. Maybe it’s the red carpet and balloons, or the mass of crowns that seems to be spreading across the school like the Nutella spread on your toast this morning, but your gut is telling you this year won’t be like the last. You’re ready to enjoy every experience that comes to you, in spite of the stressful semester of college and scholarship applications on the horizon. After taking countless first day photos and entering in the “Best Senior Crown Contest” on Twitter, the bell rings and a whirlwind begins. Hold on tight, Class of 2016, Graduation will be here before you know it!

Despite the fact that every grade level is separated by age, homework load and proximity to graduation, the first day of school can cause a whole mess of emotions to creep into any student’s stomach. If you are a new student to Gables, don’t be too nervous; we’ve all felt those first day jitters!
