Girls tragically affected by toxic gas.

Maria F. Estrada, Staff Writer

On Sept. 8, 2015, 600 girls from different schools in Hart, Afghanistan were allegedly poisoned. The gas that “poisoned” the schoolgirls has inhibited their respiratory airways, leading to nausea and pain.

Although there is no solid evidence, there are assumptions that the Taliban is to blame, due to other food poisoning cases that occurred in 2012. No one has been declared responsible; however, the militants, historically opposed to women’s education, seem to have motive and history. These women have been targeted all over schools in Hart this week with no obvious tracks that could properly connect the Taliban and the girls. These gender equality schools are progressively being affected by this poisonous gas.

I feel like this news touched me because I know my gender is being discriminated against and all we can do is make the people aware and hope they can fully recuperate

The gas that these women have inhaled is still being tested, but it’s definitely toxic. It wasn’t until a few hours after the incident that the toxic gas began to cause nausea and respiratory problems. This harming substance has caused some to be hospitalized and severely ill.  Thankfully, none have perished and most have been able to recover successfully after undergoing hospital treatment.

“It is a shame that this is happening to our youth in a time where they need us the most.

Despite the fact that it was not that harmful, the gas still roams around Afghanistan in search of new prey.
